Module 3 - Unit 5: Grant Writing
Grant Writing: How it Could Help You?
Running a recovery home can be expensive.
Grants can help your home gain financial assistance and reduce bed fees for clients by offsetting overhead costs.
Get creative! What do your clients need to be successful? In addition to financial support, grants can in include in-kind donations.
Example: Computers for your home so clients can complete job applications.
Example Grant Opportunities

Reminder: Some grants are only available to nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations. For information about becoming a nonprofit, review Unit 2.
Applying for Grants
Requirements will differ between grants.
Typically, grants require the following sections:
- A Cover Letter
- Executive Summary
- Organization Introduction
- Problem Statement or Need Description
- Goals and Objectives
- Project Design
- Program Evaluation
- Sustainability
- Budget
Pro tip: Make it easier for grantors to give you money by answering exactly what they’re looking for. No more, no less!
It’s In the Data
Data can strengthen your grant proposal. Whether the data comes from a publicly available source (like ADHS database) or from your own recovery home, grantors want to see your program is doing well.
To help you collect and use data for grant applications, a strong evaluation plan is key! Continue on to Unit 6 for ideas on collecting and reporting data, while protecting client privacy and confidentiality.
Whether it is data previously collected or data from a publicly available data source [such as The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), or The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) Dashboards],
