Unit 2: Ethics 101
SAMHSA’s Code of Ethics
- SAMHSA encourages all recovery residences to follow these ten guiding principles in order to define and understand “safe, effective, and legal recovery housing.”
- Have a clear operational Definition
- Recognize that a substance use disorder is a chronic condition requiring a range of recovery supports
- Recognize that co-occurring mental disorders often accompany substance-use disorders
- Assess applicant (potential resident) needs and the appropriateness of the residence to meet these needs
- Promote and use evidence-based practices
- Written policies, procedures, and resident expectations
- Ensures quality, integrity and resident safety
- Learn and Practice Cultural Competence
Maintain ongoing communication with interested parties and care specialists - Evaluate program effectiveness and resident success
AzRHA’s Code of Ethics
According to the AzRHA, these four ethical principles will “ensure the welfare of persons” and “protect the reputation and integrity of our profession.”
Autonomy
Acknowledge the rights of our consumers to hold views, to make choices, and to take actions based on their personal beliefs and values.
Justice
Treating others fairly; focus on the interest of the consumers and not on any personal or financial stake that would constitute a conflict of interest.
Non-maleficence
The obligation to do no harm; to not engage in any activities of fraud or deceit; to avoid abuse or harassment or other abuses of power over the consumer.
Beneficence
Act for the benefit of others; provide benefit to consumers and contribute to their welfare. According to the AzRHA, these four ethical principles will “ensure the welfare of persons” and “protect the reputation and integrity of our profession.”
NARR Code of Ethics
All persons working in NARR Affiliate organizations, (recovery residence owners, operators, staff and volunteers) are expected to adhere to the NARR Code of Ethics.
